Lenovo Launches Covertible Laptops in New York Tech Event

Chinese PC giant Lenovo unveiled Tuesday in a New York event several laptop computers that are convertible into tablets, hoping that its flexibility and stylish approach will make a striking impression in the tech market.

In an interview with Cnet.com writer Shara Tibken, Lenovo president of North American Davic Schmoock talked about the flexibility of their new laptops and his optimistic view on the future of Lenovo as the second biggest PC maker in the world.

“What people want is flexibility. People need, at the end of the day, a fully functioning PC as their primary device. But they also want the flexibility to use a tablet,” said Schmoock, who introduced four laptops convertible to tablets such as the IdeaTab Lynx and the IdeaPad Yoga 13.

Meanwhile, Endpoint Technologies Associates principal analyst Roger Kay claimed that Lenovo is using these convertible laptops to compete with other tech companies.

“They’re trying to cover the gamut of form factors that might succeed,” he said. “Lenovo doesn’t really know what will win, and neither does anyone else,” said kay.

Director of Lenovo’s global product group Peter Hortensius said the Windows RT Device, the ThinkPad Yoga 11, will be released in December while the Yoga 13 and the ThinkPad Twist will be available in North American market on October 26.

“We have a product readiness cycle, and that particular [Windows RT] product, we felt, was not quite ready,” said Hortensius.

Despite Lenovo’s optimism about their newest brand of laptops, several tech analyst believes convertible devices is a ‘compromise’ to end user.

“Anything can be forced to converge, but the problem is that products are about trade-offs, and you begin to make trade-offs to the point where what you have left doesn’t please anyone,” Cook said earlier this year about the idea of MacBook-iPad hybrid device. “You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator, but those things are probably not going be pleasing to the user.”
