Samsung Galaxy Note 2 reaches 5 million sales milestone in two months

Samsung has confirmed that it has sold more than five million units of its Galaxy Note 2 smartphone worldwide, since its release just two months ago.

The South Korean tech manufacturer said in a statement that the 5.5in device is selling at a rate nearly three times faster than its predecessor, the original Galaxy Note. The Galaxy Note 2 hit the three million mark in the first 30 days after its release, while the Galaxy Note took nearly three months to reach that figure.

Thanks to partnerships with 260 retailers around the world, there are predictions that the Note 2 could sell as many as 20 million units, although it's still a long way from the success of Samsung Galaxy S3 handset, which sold 20 million handsets in the first 100 days after its launch.

Despite the healthy sales figures, the Samsung Note 2 is the latest product to be embroiled in the patent war between industry giants Apple and Samsung. In an ongoing lawsuit, Apple has requested that the US District Court in San Jose, California add the Note 2 to a growing list of Samsung products that the iPhone producer claims infringes on its patents and should be banned.

"Apple has acted quickly and diligently to determine that these newly-released products do infringe many of the same claims already asserted by Apple," read the Apple court filing.
