Sony Announces Xperia E and Xperia E Dual

It seems like today is an auspicious day for device launches as Sony has launched two new smartphones, after Nokia unveiled the Lumia 620 earlier in the day. These here are mid-ranged smartphones but run on Android 4.0.4 which is expected from a Sony device, although we would have liked to see Jelly Bean. The smartphones are neatly spec’d and will scream out to the budget friendly users. The smartphones also sport some cool new features which Sony teased with the Xperia T update. People used to high end flagships from Samsung and HTC might not be all too interested in this new Sony offering, but we cannot deny the fact that there’s a huge market for low-end and mid-ranged smartphones. Sony has unveiled a single SIM and a dual SIM variant of the Xperia E, with both the variants featuring pretty much the same specs. While the hardware specs of the two smartphones are the same, Sony wanted each to stand out in terms of appearance, which is why it has given different color combinations to both, more on that later.

The Xperia E and Xperia E Dual packs a 3.5-inch LCD with a resolution of 480×320. The smartphones are powered by dual core CPUs (Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM7227A) clocked at 1 GHz. What this means is that the smartphones can run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with ease, and Sony has plans to roll out the update sometime soon. The smartphones come with 4GB of internal storage (2.2GB user accessible) with a microSD card slot for storage expansion. There are 3.2MP camera sensors on the back of the two smartphones, with no front facing camera on either. Sony has gone with a moderate 1,530 mAh battery, which should be good enough for a device that doesn’t have all those pixels to crunch. The smartphones apparently will sustain video and music playback for up to 8 and 30 hours respectively. And as this is a Sony device, you can expect some good media controls and Walkman styling all over. Sony is also packing in a relatively unknown technology called HD Voice, which promises crisper and clearer voice. This feature was brought to the Xperia T a.k.a “Bond” Phone with an update last month. The Xperia E will be available in White, Pink and Black color variants while the Xperia E Dual will come in Gold and Black variants.

Both the smartphones will start hitting shelves in the first quarter of 2013, although the exact date isn’t mentioned. Prices haven’t been disclosed either, but we don’t expect that to be much of an issue as this is a low cost offering anyways. Fancy features like HD Voice and the typical Sony Walkman experience does make the company stand out from the crowd. But as always, Sony has been slow in rolling out devices in the market, at least in comparison to other Android manufacturers.
