Launch Weekend iPhone 5 Sales Expected to Hit Eight Million Mark

Apple announced yesterday that they had sold a massive 2 million iPhone 5 pre-orders in the first 24 hours of the handset going up for sale, and now according to Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray, Apple are expected to sell a massive 8 million iPhone 5′s in their first weekend.

Last year Apple announced that they had sold over 1 million iPhone 4S units in the first 24 hours, and after the first weekend of sales they announced a total of 4 million units sold.

Given the 2 million pre-orders, we remain confident that Apple can deliver 8 million (range of 6-10 million) iPhones in the launch weekend. The reason we are confident in the 8 million is two-fold. First, initial 24 hour pre-orders for the iPhone 5 were up 100% y/y from the iPhone 4S. Last year, pre-orders accounted for 25% of total weekend launch unit sales. Assuming the same initial pre-order/retail distribution, the pre-order total would suggest 8 million launch units.

It will be interesting to see just how many iPhone 5′s Apple are able to sell by the end of next weekend, and we wonder if the figure will be higher than the 8 million estimated.
