Unlocked Apple iPhone 5 now listed for sale on Apple's U.S. website

If you live in the U.S. and have been waiting for Apple to start selling unlocked units of the Apple iPhone 5, you have to wait no longer. Apple's own website now shows the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions of the unlocked iPhone 5 priced at $649, $749 and $849 respectively. All three models will ship in one week. Keep in mind that the phone will only work on supported GSM networks, like AT&T in the U.S.

Apple says that if you don't want to wear the handcuffs associated with a two-year service contract, or you want to use a local carrier when out of the country, that you get the appropriate SIM card (nano for iPhone 5) and install it on the unlocked variant of the phone. The SIM card does not come with the unit.

Apple is limiting these online orders to two per person. If the thought of being tied up with a two-year contract makes you sweat and you plan on using one of the supported GSM networks, you can order an unlocked version of the Apple iPhone 5 by clicking on the sourcelink.

"If you don’t want a multiyear service contract, or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone is the best choice. It does not come with a micro-SIM card for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, or a nano-SIM card for iPhone 5, so you’ll need to get one from any supported GSM carrier worldwide. To start using it, simply insert the card into the slot on your iPhone and turn it on by pressing and holding the On/Off button for a few seconds. Then follow the onscreen instructions to set up your iPhone."-Apple
