Today, the company has announced the upcoming availability of the long-awaited upgrade for one of its newer handsets, the Xperia P.
The information has been recently confirmed by Sony Mobile India and published on its official Facebook account.
According to the company, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for Sony Xperia P is expected to arrive on August 19: “You're going to love this! ICS Upgrade for Xperia P will be here between 19th and 25th August 2012.”
So far, we’ve been unable to learn if the update will be pushed only in India, or Sony will make the upgrade file available on its support site for all Xperia P owners to download it.
There’s also a chance that Android 4.0 ICS for Sony Xperia P will be pushed OTA (over the air), in waves, so not all owners will get it simultaneously.
In the same piece of news, we expect Sony Mobile to offer Android 4.0 ICS updates for additional Xperia smartphones, including Xperia U and Xperia sola.
Unfortunately, we don’t have any timeframes for the updates, but we can safely assume that these will be available soon after Xperia P receives the promised Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade.
Sony Xperia P hit shelves back in May with Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, but the Japanese company confirmed that an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade would be available in the following months.
Although the Xperia P will receive the promised update eventually, Google has already released the next version of Android, Jelly Bean.
Obviously, this might be just a preliminary step to a future Android 4.1 upgrade, though Sony has yet to announce any Jelly Bean update plans. Stay tuned for more info on the subject.
