AT&T Rolling Out ICS to Samsung Captivate Glide

Those with a Samsung Captivate Glide smartphone can now get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich.

AT&T on Thursday announced that customers with the phone can now update their device to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The updated mobile operating system will bring a host of new features, including a new typeface optimized for high-resolution screens to improve readability, AT&T product manager Ryan Lee, wrote in a blog post.

It also comes with a new browser that brings improved page loading, tabbed browsing, offline reading, and desktop mode, he said.

There's also new lock and unlock features, which will take you to the apps that you want even quicker. You'll be able to unlock directly to the camera, text messaging, phone dialer, or home screen. Plus, the new face unlock feature will let you unlock the screen using facial-recognition technology.

The update will also bring changes for notifications.

"You can easily swipe away notifications with the new notifications bar and multitasking is easier with the new Recent Apps Shortcut that lets you switch between apps quickly," Lee said. "There's even a setting to help your track your data usage."

The Captivate Glide, released last November, is an average-sized, dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2-powered Android smartphone with a slide-out keyboard. The phone boasts a 4-inch, 800-by-480 Super AMOLED screen, and is actually a lot like the popular Samsung Galaxy S II, with the addition of a full, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a slight bump down in specs.

PCMag gave the phone our Editors' Choice as the best keyboarded smartphone available on AT&T right now.

You can download the ICS update for your Captivate Glide by visiting www.samsung.com/us/attcaptivateglide/update and following the instructions on the site.

Meanwhile, if you're still waiting on Ice Cream Sandwich for a different Android smartphone, sit tight - it should be coming, eventually.

"We are continuing to launch ICS on additional Android smartphones, so be sure to stay tuned for the latest!" Lee said.
