ASUS Padfone 2 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update now available

The ASUS Padfone 2, which was launched in October, receives a major overhaul in its operating system as the manufacturer recently rolled out the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update for it. Originally, this smartphone-tablet combo runs version 4.0, otherwise known as Ice Cream Sandwich, but ASUS promised to roll out an update this year and so this news is apparently the fulfillment of it.
Reports indicate that the update can now be pulled down over the air with build number JRO03L 10.4.33-0. This build brings all perks Jelly Bean could possibly offer, however, in the case of ASUS Padfone 2, the user interface remains the same as the manufacturer maintains its custom skin to match with the device’s physical feature. Unless you’ll have to dig into the system’s version, you won’t be able to tell which Padfone 2 runs Ice Cream Sandwich and which one got updated to Jelly Bean.

Among the notable features Jelly Bean for Padfone 2 brings are the following:

Offline Google Voice Typing. Voice typing is never new for any Android user but such feature always required an internet connection so the app could connect to the servers to find the words displayed on the screen. This is also a common feature any JB users can enjoy but it is much useful for Padfone owners.

Face Unlock. Ice Cream Sandwich also has this feature but the Google made it better with the latest version. As far as security is concerned, Face Unlock may not be the best option as photos can be used to unlock devices. Jelly Bean, however, brings the little extra “Liveness Check” that requires the user to blink after the initial scan to add a bit of security.

Google Now. Many say this feature is Google’s take on Apple’s Siri but it’s more of an all-around assistant rather than being voice-activated search engine. It saves all information you queried and save them in a form of a “card” that you can also access at any time.

There are, of course, hundreds of bug fixes and performance boosters that would come with this update so it would be a very huge file to download. According to users who have already updated their device, it would take about 15 to 30 minutes of download depending on the quality and speed of the internet connection. As a rule of thumb, never interrupt the device during update process as there is a possibility your Padfone 2 will be bricked.
