HTC is believed to be preparing a handset with a five-inch display that is set to debut this coming September or October. This device could be the flagship phone of the company that is currently the world’s fifth largest manufacturer of smartphones.
If this rumor is true, the five-incher will have, to date, the largest display among all other phones that the company has released.
Digitimes notes that the phone will have a resolution of 1794 x 1080 pixels. The Verge, however, disagrees, saying that the five-incher will sport a 1920 x 1080 resolution as the 1794 x 1080 resolution does not take into account the 126 lines on which the navigation buttons are found. Between the two, the 1920 x 1080 resolution is more common among phones today.
The handset moreover has a Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 System on a Chip CPU clocked at 1.5GHz running alongside an Adreno 320 GPU.
This new offering could help HTC recover from the financial slump that it is experiencing. HTC recently reported that its shares have fallen to their lowest in a period of 2.5 years. In the past, the Taiwan-based company experienced some success with models like the HTC Desire and HTC Legend.
With the new flagship phone, the company will once again face tough competition from Samsung Electronics which is considered to be the pioneer in the five-inch smartphone niche. Samsung is getting ready to unveil a new smartphone with a 5.5-inch screen called the Samsung Galaxy Note II at the end of this month. Meanwhile, other companies have followed the lead of Samsung and launched five-inch smartphone offerings of their own. Among these are LG Electronics which has the Optimus Vu and Pantech which has the Vega S5. China-based companies like Coolpad and K-Touch also have five-inchers, namely the 9930 and 9900 for Coolpad and the W710 for K-Touch. Apart from these, HTC will also have to contend with the upcoming iPhone.
