While my Xbox 360 has mainly been used as a Netflix & Hulu Plus machine ever since I built my ‘Battlestation’ PC, the next generation of home consoles is just around the corner. Microsoft has been a bit cagey with information about the ‘next Xbox’, but now we at least know that their is a ‘next Xbox’.
Windows Live General Manager Brian Hall casually confirmed the console’s existence to The Verge on a podcast last week.
“We did this- we’ve had Hotmail for- and operated Hotmail for about 16 years. We obviously have Exchange, and Outlook that people use at work,” Hall said. “We just decided it was time to do something new and bring the best from each of those- put them together and release it right in time for the new wave of products that we have coming out with Windows 8, with the new version of Office, with the new Windows Phone and the new Xbox.”
Yes good people, that casual mention of ‘the new Xbox’ is the first official confirmation from Microsoft that they are in fact, making another Xbox. It’s been the worst kept secret in the industry, but now it’s finally confirmed.
Some may remember that earlier this year, a 56-page internal document was leaked that outlined Microsoft’s strategies for the future Xbox.
While I’ve for all intents and purposes become a PC gamer, there’s no denying that the fate of the video game industry rests heavily on what the console market does. Am I as excited for the next round of consoles as I have been for previous releases? No. That’s mainly due to the heavy focus that the consoles have taken towards motion control and anti-used games.
While consoles have moved to the middle, to garner the widest user base possible, it seems like PCs have become the bastion of gamers that want things the way they used to be. Now get off my virtual lawn!
