Sony’s been struggling for some time now to position itself as the Android manufacturer of choice for gamers. The Xperia Play ended up underwhelming consumers upon its arrival, and the company’s new direction of PlayStation Certified hardware, both from itself as well as other manufacturers, hasn’t really found the momentum it needs. Sony continues to try and flesh-out that program, as it revealed while discussing details of PlayStation Mobile today.
The big news is how PlayStation Mobile will work across platforms. Sony’s going to link users of certified devices to PlayStation Network ID numbers. That means that if you purchase a game on one device, you’ll be able to access it on other hardware tied to the same PSN ID; this even extends to the PlayStation Vita handheld console. It’s not set in stone, but there’s a chance that Sony could store your saved game progress to the cloud, letting you pick up right where you left off as you transition from device to device.
Sony also shared news of additional hardware partners for the program. We’ve already heard of HTC devices being PlayStation Certified, and those models will soon be join by those made by ASUS, as well as gaming tablet company Wikipad.
