The real war in tablet market is about to begin. Microsoft has just unveiled a pair of tablets in competition to Apple and Samsung. The Redmond tech giant will run its new tablets – the Surface RT and Surface Pro – on different variants of its upcoming Windows 8 OS. Microsoft’s goal with the new tablets is to set its foot in the growing tablet market. To beat the dominance of Apple and Samsung, Microsoft has specially designed the Surface tablets with its Windows 8. When launched, the Surface tablets will face major threat from iPad and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. Here is a comparison between the tablets using the available details about the Surface.

Form factor
When it comes to the form factor, Microsoft looks to give a touch of innovation to its Surface tablets. The machines will more look like as hybrids of tablets and notebook. Having 10.6-inch displays, the tablets are bigger than both the iPad and Galaxy Tab. Apple follows its former CEO Steve Jobs’ minimalist design theory for iPad 3 as well. The 9.7-inch device looks quite simple and superb. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is also up with some design modifications from its predecessor to battle with iPad. The device features round edges and the entire tablet keeps an added grey/silver bezel round the outside.

Display screen
Both the Surface tablets are set to come with large 10.6-inch displays with 16:9 aspect ratio. Microsoft has apparently designed its tablets with big displays to make them hybrids of tablets and Ultrabooks. Well, at least the Surface Pro version, which is to run on Windows 8, will be both an Ultrabook and tablet with its large display and keyboard. Pixel resolution and other details of the Surface tablets are not available as yet. The iPad 3 is there with Apple’s famous Retina display, at the same time. The display features a 2048 x 1536 resolution on its 9.7-inch screen. It is when the Galaxy Tab 2 features a 1280 x 800 resolution at 149 ppi. To be true, iPad 3 beats both the present and perspective future competitor by wide margin.

Innards
Two variants of the Surface tablets are designed for ARM and Intel chips. The Surface RT is a special version with ARM chipset, while the Surface Pro runs on Intel Mobile processor with Nvidia’s Tegra 3 chipset. Deep details about the chips of the tablets are yet to come out of cover. The new iPad is powered by Apple’s own chipset A5X, which features quad core graphics. As per Apple, the processor is around four times faster than its nearest rival, the Nvidia Tegra 3. Samsung’s Tab 10.1 2 is up with a dual core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, in the meanwhile. Samsung has not yet launched a quad core version for its flagship Android tablet.

Firmware
Simply, Surface tablets will run on Windows 8. Remember, the ARM-based Surface RT has a special Windows 8 version called the Windows RT. The Surface Pro has the same Windows 8 version, which we will get on your laptops, computers and servers. Apple iPad 3 comes with iOS 5 and it will soon get updated with the new iOS 6 as well. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is powered by Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich.

Camera
In fact, Microsoft has not said anything about the camera of its Surface tablets. It is not still clear whether the company would add a camera or not. Anyway, there is enough reason to think that Microsoft may avoid a rear camera on its tablets, since they are almost useless on large tablets. But, the front camera will let users make video conferences, though. The iPad 3 comes with a 5-megapixel backlight-illuminated sensor (BSI) with stabilization feature for both stills and video. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.2 features a 3.15-megapixel rear camera, which you can use to capture 1080p HD videos. Both the iPad and Tab have front cameras of moderate quality for video chats.
