iPad Mini Rumors: iPod Touch Design, 4G LTE

The iPad Mini rumor mill is at work once again and this time, the rumors center around its design, its connectivity and its release date.

According to 9to5Mac, the iPad Mini will feature a design that resembles a large iPod touch. Supposedly, Apple’s 7-inch iPad will have small bezels around the sides, separate volume buttons instead of a volume rocker and a microphone situated on the device’s backside.

The lack of a bezel would make it easier to hold from the back but it will make it a bit more difficult to hold when in portrait mode. With a smaller bezel, wandering fingers could potentially trigger the touchscreen. It’s possible that Apple has done something to prevent that but as of yet, details remain unclear.

9to5Mac claims that John Gruber of Daring Fireball has received similar information and that is a sign that these details could very well be the real deal.

Gruber, as of this writing, has not posted any details regarding the iPad Mini.

The report also claims that there could be a front-facing camera on board the iPad Mini. There is no mention of a rear camera, something that Google’s Nexus 7 ditched to keep the price low. Apple’s iPad Mini has been rumored to be in the $200-$299 price range.

There is also speculation that Apple might ditch cameras altogether, possibly to keep the cost low. 4G LTE remains a possibility as well. Neither the Kindle Fire nor the Nexus 7 have cellular data which would make the iPad Mini an attractive alternative.

As for a release date, the consensus appears to be that the iPad Mini won’t launch until after the iPhone 5 does. The iPhone 5 has been rumored for a September 21st release and the iPad Mini probably won’t launch on the same day, even if it’s announced alongside the new smartphone.

Instead, the device may arrive in either October or November.
