Apple’s partnership with Liquidmetal Technologies hasn’t exactly bared much fruit, with only a simple SIM eject tool to speak of. But something of interest must be in the pipeline, otherwise the two companies wouldn’t have extended their licensing deal through February 2014. Perhaps that timeframe might tell us something about Apple’s mysterious plans to implement Liquidmetal in a “breakthrough product.”
The extended deal continues Apple’s full license to all Liquidmetal’s intellectual property for use in consumer electronics. Dr. Atakan Peker, Liquidmetal’s inventor, previously said that Apple is unlikely to implement the alloy in future laptops, as the complex process of creating big enough cases could take several years. With a deal through 2014, we’d expect that Apple has a much more important goal in its sights. Like, say, an iPhone.
