Although LG made the Optimus Vu “phablet” available as a Korea-only device back in March, we suspected that things won’t stay the same for a very long time. However, seeing that the 5-incher was nowhere to be found in the US or Europe almost four months after that, we pretty much lost hope for the gadget to ever become globally released.
That’s until we spotted a set of FCC approval documents for a mysteriously codenamed LG VS950 device, which has every chance to be the first US version of the Optimus Vu. How can we tell? Well, it’s pretty easy. Just take the stripped down phone schema that appears in the certification papers and compare it with the Korean Optimus Vu (like in the image above).
Notice the similarities? I’m sure you do, and, while it’s not impossible for two different phones to have identical figures and profiles, in this particular case we highly doubt that LG will release two different phablets in just a few months.
Now that we’ve almost positively identified what device we’re dealing with, let’s see what else we can make of the future US Optimus VU from the FCC filing. As you might suspect, there’s not much to tell, but we can safely assume that this particular 5-incher will come to Verizon.
Aside from the “VS” prefix in its codename, that almost confirms it as a future Big Red device, the 950 will also come with support for 4G LTE band 13, as well as GSM 850/1900 MHz, which are Verizon supported bands.
As far as release date and pricing goes, we don’t have much to report right now, but, giving the fact that the VS950 was also granted Bluetooth Certification not long ago, it’s very likely to see the phone up for sale in July or August, at the latest.
Finally, in terms of tech specs and features, the US Optimus Vu should be similarly equipped with its Korean counterpart. That means a 5-inch HD-IPS LCD touchscreen with 1024 x 768 pixels resolution, a dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm MSM8660 Snapdragon processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 MP rear-facing camera, and 32 GB of internal memory, while a microSD card slot is likely to be missing.
The biggest difference we’re hoping to see between the Korean and American Optimus Vu refers to the software, with the original phone still running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, while the future device should (at least) come with 4.0 ICS.
