HTC Butterfly Announced, Global Variant of the J Butterfly and the Droid DNA

HTC stepped up its game big time with the announcements of the J Butterfly and the Droid DNA, both featuring a mammoth 5-inch 1080p display. This is the first time a smartphone is getting a display like this and obviously we were all excited to meet their international sibling. As usually is the case, HTC announces the global version first and then follows it up with country specific variants. But things got reversed this time around, and people don’t seem to mind that. Today, the company has formally announced the new HTC Butterfly which follows in the footsteps of its Japanese variant. The similarities to the American variant are less as the name rightly suggests.

The device will feature the same 5-inch 1080p Super LCD 3 and will come with the usual array of Beats Audio branding along with HTC’s own Sense UI. The major bonus on this one is the addition of a microSD card slot, which was absent from the Droid DNA but available on the J Butterfly. So it won’t be wrong to call this the global variant of the J Butterfly rather than the global variant of the Droid DNA. The device weighs a moderate 140 grams and features HTC’s typical soft touch polycarbonate body like the one we saw on the HTC One X and the Windows Phone 8X. There’s an 8MP camera sensor on the back with HTC’s ImageSense chip and a 2.1MP wide angle front facing camera. Both the cameras are capable of recording 1080p video. The same 2,020 mAh battery pack is used here too, which shouldn’t provide the best battery backup. But going by user reviews it seems like the Droid DNA did surprisingly well despite the relatively smaller battery. The device comes with 16GB of on board storage, which can be expanded with a microSD card as we already mentioned. The chipset used here is the quad core Qualcomm S4 Pro clocked at 1.5 GHz. There’s 2GB of RAM to supplement multitasking with ease. There’s no 4G LTE on board as there isn’t much support for these networks outside of the U.S. The Butterfly will run on Android 4.1 with Sense 4+ on board.

It was about time that HTC launched this device, especially with the holiday season upon us. However, the company has refrained from mentioning a launch date or the price of the device. So don’t get your hopes up yet. We expect this to sell well in Europe and Asian markets, but it would also depend on when HTC launches the device. All in all the HTC Butterfly is a welcome addition to the market which is crowded by similarly spec’d devices. We can expect to see HD displays become obsolete when we go into 2013. Technology is evolving fast, perhaps a little too fast, but we don’t complain.
