The tech world today is buzzing with the news of the new iOS Maps being funny in that it is nothing like what was shown at the keynote event last week. Apple has for the first time come up with its own maps and navigation app in the newly released mobile operating system, iOS 6, and it is nowhere near pleasing its customers. If you have been active on Facebook for a few hours now, you will see a lot of people posting screenshots of the iOS Maps app showing funny terrains and buildings in 3D.
Nokia, which has its own Ovi Maps, is taking very good advantage of this situation to market its own mapping and navigation services. Nokia’s Pino Bonetti has managed to write a blog post on the company’s Nokia Conversations blog comparing the home grown Ovi Maps with the new Apple Maps. And to keep the comparison fair, the company has included the utterly popular Google Maps as well. He writes:
Unlike our competitors, which are financing their location assets with advertising or licensing mapping content from third parties, we completely own, build and distribute mapping content, platform and apps. In other words, we truly understand that maps and location-based apps must be accurate, provide the best quality and be accessible basically anywhere. That’s been standard practice at Nokia for the past six years, and we also understand that ‘pretty’ isn’t enough. You expect excellence in your smartphone mapping experience.
Though this may seem as a big talk, the benchmark figures produced by Nokia seems to back this big talk up. I have used Nokia’s Ovi Maps on a Symbian S60v5 smart phone a few years back and I have to admit, even then the Ovi Maps was a very good assistant for turn by turn navigation and mapping. Google Maps, nonetheless is pretty good in itself and has become the top contender in the competition. Which one do you prefer?
