Google says 500 million Android devices have been activated so far

Google is certainly not going to be at the forefront of the technology world today with Apple expected to unveil its next-generation iPhone this afternoon. However, that didn't stop Google from taking advantage of an early-morning opportunity to brag about the success of its Android operating system.

Google has announced that it has 500 million Android devices activated around the world. Google also notes that over 1.3 million new Android devices are added to that total every single day.

The announcement comes from Google's Android director of product management, Hugo Barra. He said, "Today is a big day for Android... 500 million devices activated globally, and over 1.3 million added every single day."

So far, few Android devices are actually running the latest flavor of the operating system known as Jelly Bean or version 4.1. Right now, Google says that 20.9% of all Android usage is Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Jelly Bean has a scant 1.2% of the Android market according to Google.

Barra also mentioned that the Jelly Bean statue was back on the Google lawn along with the other statues denoting various flavors of Android that have launched. That Jelly Bean statue had previously melted in the sun and had to be removed for repairs.
